Minikitchen
Description
It was in 1963 that Joe Colombo designed for Boffi the Minikitchen, a mobile kitchen cube on wheels. This features a vision of a prophet, able to anticipate the evolution of the compact kitchen and, more generally, of contemporary living by over half a century. “Things have to be flexible”, the designer said in 1966, “my kitchen can be easily moved when not in use, it closes in a single compact volume like a box”. Minikitchen is a complete unit on wheels and electrically powered that comprises everything needed from a kitchen, even if in miniature: refrigerator, cooking range, containers, drawers for pots and dishes for six people, pull-out tray, sockets for small electric appliances, cutting boards. It won the silver medal at the XIII Triennale di Milano in 1964 and was exhibited at the MoMA in the legendary 1972 exhibition 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape'; today it is part of the permanent collection of the New York museum and of other important museums in the world. Today this compact kitchen is proposed in a version made of white Corian® with two swivelling castors and two with block brakes: but if modifications have been made to technical aspects and materials, the form and concept remain intact. It contains a 60-liter fridge and an electric cooking plate, as well as storage compartments, chopping board, pull-out top and power sockets for small appliances. It measures just over one meter wide, one meter high, 650 mm deep.

Joe Colombo
He attends the Politecnico and the Brera Art Accademy in Milan. After an important experience in the informal art, in 1963 he devotes himself to the design of industrial products.
His interest in different domestic environments and in the experimentation of new materials and latest technologies brings him to design multifunctional items and futuristic “machines for living” that are flexible, convertible, and independent from the architectural contest to meet the different needs of the user. Many of these items become icons for the new way of living in small open spaces.
For the Domusricerca group at Eurodomus 1 in Genova in 1966 he includes the MINIKITCHEN (designed in 1963) and the CENTRAL BLOCK KITCHEN produced by Boffi.
These blocks offer a new way of living in the kitchen. The MINIKITCHEN block follows the user in different environments, while the CENTRAL BLOCK KITCHEN clear the walls of the kitchen and allows the optimization of the functions.
He is awarded numerous design prizes including: First prize In-Arch for the interior design of an hotel in Sardinia; one gold and two silver medals at the XIII Triennale in 1964 (one for the MINIKITCHEN); two Compasso D’Oro; two International Design Award; the Tecnhotel prize and the SMAU prize. Many of his works are part of the collections of the major museums around the world.
In 2012 the original Mini-Kitchen is revisited, it comes the new version outdoor.
